Megachurch Pastor Challenges Hypocrites, Pretenders

A pastor at one of the largest churches in the country launched a new sermon series addressing the hypocrisy and the pretending prevalent among Christians.

Entitled "The Pretenders," the series draws attention to the biblical time when Jesus went not to the red light district, the nightclub or the boardroom to confront the hypocrites but to church.

"[Jesus'] main problem with the ... religious leaders in his day is that they were hypocrites," said Kyle Idleman, teaching minister at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Ky. "That's what he calls them to their face."

Over the weekend Idleman, who also admitted he wasn't perfect and was a sinner like everyone else, addressed the hypocrites in the church today saying, "There are pretenders among us. They're putting on a performance. ...They've learned to wear this mask in church."

There are unmarried couples who are "sitting next to each other in church pretending that their relationship was just as pure last night as it appears to be right now," he noted. "There are pretenders who will sing amazing grace with tear-filled eyes but they refuse to extend that same grace to a family member who hurt them."

"There are pretenders who have become experts at separating their faith from their political views ... from their money management ... and from their entertainment preferences," he added. "There are pretenders who spend an hour and a half every day in front of a mirror making sure everything looks great on the outside but just can't seem to find 10 minutes to read their Bible or to pray.

"There are pretenders who are so quick to point out and condemn the sexual immorality in their culture but don't seem too concerned about their lust."

Studies conducted by LifeWay Research in 2007 have shown that most people outside and inside the church believe hypocrisy is prevalent among believers. Among the unchurched, 72 percent said they think the church is full of hypocrites, and 67 percent of 20- to 29-year-olds said the same.

There are two groups of hypocrites Christians tend to fall into, Idleman observed. They include the Sadducees and the Pharisees, who made up the religious ruling body in Jesus' time. The Sadducees made up the chief priests and elders and were born into that position. The Pharisees, meanwhile, were Jews who studied their way into their position.

Many pretenders today see their faith as something they were born into and never chose, Idleman explained.

"You know how to act, you know what to say, you know what to do ... but you never chose it," the Southeast minister said. "You got the part down but it was never real."

"As long as you could remember you've always had that mask. In fact, you've had it so long that you don't even know what you look like without it," he added.

To such pretenders, Jesus would say "woe to you, you hypocrites," Idleman said.

But a lot of pretenders are more like the Pharisees, Idleman believes. They see their faith as "intellectual knowledge and behavioral compliance."

Such Christians may say all the right things and follow all the rules, but their hearts don't reflect that, he indicated.

"It's not enough just to know the right things and to say the right things. [Jesus] wants it to be in your heart," the minister stressed. "Jesus summed up the Pharisees in this way – they honor me with their lips but their hearts are far from me."

Just as Jesus was upfront and harsh in rebuking the hypocrisy among the religious leaders, Idleman urged Christians to also be brutal with themselves.

"Be brutal. Be broken," he encouraged. "Jesus is trying to hold up a mirror and tell us the truth."

The cure for pretending, he said, is confessing one's sins.

"When you take the mask off ... you find a peace for your soul that just doesn't come when you're faking it," said Idleman.

Southeast Christian Church is the 12th largest church in America, according to Outreach magazine's 2008 top 100 list.

When He asks us, "Do we love Him?" what is our real answer. We show we love Him if we keep His commandments. True love for Christ won't allow us to remain hypocrites. His love constrains to obedience and leads to joy and peace in the Holy Spirit.

Amen!

In concidering Hypocritical lifestyles, we must also concider our own lifestyle, and upon whos life it is based.

Jesus told us who the true believers are:

I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because Abraham obeyed me and kept my requirements, my commands, my decrees and my laws." (Gen 26:4-5)

"Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven." (Matt 5:19)

"You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men. And he said to them: "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!" (Mk 7:8-9)

Are the traditions that we follow the traditions of God or of men?

"Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." (Jn 14:21)

"If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love." (Jn 15:10)

Whos commands did Jesus follow? Whos life are we supposed to reflect. Whos commands do we follow?

"Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God's commands is what counts." (1 Cor 7:19)

“Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: "Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!"? These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.” (Col 2:20-23)

If Jesus is the example that we must follow, why do we no do as He has done? We claim one thing and teach that same thing, but is that thing what Jesus intended for us? Much to concider. What will He see in us and in our lifestyle when He returns to claim what is His? Will His image, His life and lifestyle be reflected in our life and lifestyle? His beliefs, His instruction, His will, His commands which were to live as He did, in love and devotion, seeking always to please the Father. Jesus submitted to the Father, and taught His disciples to do the same.

Just an add on to concider in regard to hypocrisy.

Blessings of grace, wisdom and revealed truth be upon you brother. Amen

Warning- a rant of mine.

It is true there are hypocrits all over in the body of believers, but the biggest hypocrit pretender Christians are not as much the attendees of these church buildings but the Pastors and elders themselves.

They are the biggest pretenders of all unwilling to stand up for truth and honor of scriptural integrity instead willing to compromise for a higher paycheck and bigger house. The biggest pretenders are the church leaders, evangelists and elders that never just read the Pauline Epistles intead opting forquoting a verse hear and a word there so God's words can be twisted to mean something else that never encourages healthy scriptural discussions of truth and church dogma. I'll bet this preacher is even teaching unscriptural church dogma that increases his paychecks at the end of the month.

Hypocrits following hypocrits pretending all others are hypocrits except their imperfect unscriptural dogm. I could list many things here but I will not because most do not read their bibles and hold their leaders accountable to scriptural integrity.

I have heard Pastors preach judgmental stuff like this and you think you found someone teaching the bible and what it states yet when you study their theology you realize they are also way off from scriptural integrity. I'll bet he is no different then others living lvish lifestyles and getting rich off the gospel.

eph4: 29Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

show me anywhere in the epistles where paul  addressed other believers in this way. those were people that paul knew and witnessed to, and took responsibility for their spiritual growth.

those that christ addressed was a specific group that he knew individually, that he knew specifically, in the temple, that he witnessed to every day. this man is making an amorphous gesture not from individual personal witness but from ruminations from his own mind. if he was to be called into an account of what person, on what day and at what time.............................he would be speechless. and if he is able to speak of a specific individual how does that account for all believers. thru our entire lives we are guilty of almost everysin. our hope isnt in focus of a our sin but instead what we have in christ. the sin has Already been has been taken care of.

he is disallusioned in thinking that its guilt that brings others to repentance that leads to salvation, because that is what he is selling. the truth is that it is godly sorrow that does it. 2corr7:7-10

in matthew

jesus was speaking against the pharises because they were selling that their certain behaviors were what god expected of believers. jesus told believers to do what the pharisees said but not do what they did. and then jesus told them the behaviors that god expected.
